I have received Mr. Chadwick's reports.
5. I shall address you in a separate Despatch on the question of whether it will be possible to cover this expenditure by further reductions on Public Works Extraordinary as shown in the Enclosure to my Despatch No. 254 of the 14th instant.
6. Reference is made in another Report of Mr. Chadwick's, which is at present under revision by the Director of Public Works, to the flushing of low level sewers mentioned at page 23 of the report on Sanitation. The former report will be sent to you as soon as it is ready.
7. With regard to recommendations (g) page 35 and (j) page 36 of the Report on Sanitation, the Director of Public Works reports that these works are not urgent and in any case cannot, as far as he can foresee, be undertaken, even if the Staff of the Public Works Department be increased, until the works in connection with new Waterworks are well advanced, when some of the Engineering Staff could probably be released for these works.
8. The Director of Public Works has conferred with the Medical Officer of Health regarding the transfer of the maintenance of sewers and drains referred to in (k) and (l) on page 36 and the Medical Officer of Health is of opinion that he can supervise the work without any increase in the Staff of the Sanitary Board.
9. Steps are being taken to give effect to the recommendation made at (l) on page 36.
